Netarts-Oceanside Visitor Safety

Netarts and Oceanside both have hidden dangers you should be aware of!

Netarts Bay is a fantastic place for crabbing and clamming, but leads to numerous drowning deaths every year.  Be aware of incoming AND outgoing tides!  Tide charts are available as cell phone apps, and are available in paper copies in most businesses in Tillamook, Netarts and Oceanside.

Many people are trapped by incoming tides - do NOT wear waders.  Waders fill with water and frequently lead to drowning.

WEAR PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES (PFDs or Life Vests) when in the Bay.  The water temperature - year round - is VERY cold.  Our drowning victims usually suffer rapid hypothermia.  PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICES are CRITICAL for survival.

Outgoing tides are incredibly powerful at the mouth of Netarts Bay.  Many victims are swept out to sea before our rescue crews can reach them.

Oceanside Beaches offer incredible whale watching, agate hunting and tidal pools, but SNEAKER WAVES kill many visitors every year.  Sneaker waves are unexpectadly high waves that come much higher onto shore.  These waves frequently sweep visitors off driftwood logs and beaches and out into open ocean.  Sneaker Wave alerts will be posted at www.Weather.Gov

Watch children AT ALL TIMES.  The water temperature is VERY cold, and few victims survive.
